Tailgating on Southwest

So I have been asked how I managed to take tailgating supplies on an airplane to FAU. The answer is not that complicated. If you search the web you can find hard cases for your golf clubs. These come in lots of sizes and options. But all you really need is one that is just large enough to handle your tent. Measure up to the part of the case where it starts to narrow. Once you put the tent in the case you can just pack in additional pieces that will fit and allow the case to close. I was able to add:

*  a 20′ light flagpole

*  Wheel stand for the flagpole

*  Two folding chairs

*  Large umbrella

*  Bungee cords

Depending on how cheap you go on the case (I went really cheap) you may also want to get a pair of tie-down straps to wrap around the case and keep it closed. Not that I’m saying baggage carriers will toss the case or anything.  Also be prepared for the bag to be inspected.  so it will be opened by the TSA.  Not a usual scanner image for a golf bag.

One file note: Be prepared to pay an overweight charge. In my case I was at 62 lbs versus the 50 max to qualify for a free bag on Southwest. I had weighed it before I left so was prepared for the fee.
